Around 600,000 people visit the Honolulu Zoo annually. It is the largest zoo within a radius of 2,300 miles of Hawaii and is unique in that it is the only zoo in the United States originating from a King’s grant of royal lands to the people! Read about it’s history here.
At first, the Queen Kapiolani Park was designed for exotic birds and horse racing. In 1896 the park was established permanently, with the city taking over the park’s administration. All of a sudden bears, lions, and Daisy, a friendly African elephant, joined the zoo crew! Nowadays, there are newly constructed facilities and exotic animals like camels, giraffes, chimps, and spider monkeys.
