Kona Activities
Kona is a rich and exciting tourist destination in Hawaii. There are many activities along the Kona Coastline and on the Big Island to enjoy (when you’re not relaxing on the beach!).

Kona Sunset
The Kona condo and Kona Makai complex are great places to relax, but if you’re more interested in getting out and active, we’ve found some great (free) Kona activities for you to work into your Hawaiian itinerary.
Free Things to Do:
Hilo:
Kona activities abound at Hilo. Hilo is about 30 minutes north of the volcano. If you plan to explore for a full day, go to the Hamakua coast, Waimea, and the many waterfalls and gardens near Hilo. The Waipio Valley is a smart destination for those who like to hike.
Waikoloa Petroglyph Field:
Off Hwy 19 (a.k.a. “the Queen K Highway”), roughly 25 minutes north of Kailua Kona lays the Waikoloa Petroglyph Field. A Petroglyph is an ancient carving made lava flow. The Petroglyphs are chiseled into the rock on the Kings walking trail roughly a quarter mile north of the Waikoloa Kings shopping center. If you head out, be sure to bring sunscreen, wear a hat, and wear strong hiking shoes.

The Volcano:
Visiting the volcano is one thing every visitor to Kona should do. If you get up early leaving Kailua, be sure to see South Point. On the way to the volcano, a quick must-see is Punalu’u beach. Punalu’u is a black sand beach only a couple minutes off the direct path to the volcano, and is one of the few locations on the planet where the rare Hawksbill turtle’s nest (be sure to respect their privacy).
Once you reach the volcano, after visiting the visitor’s center, check out the lava tube and drive along the rim road. Many stopping points are positioned along the drive which you’ll enjoy. Going down to sea level, The Chain of Craters road is a preferred destination for many.
