If you’re looking for help in choosing which book to use, I have two to recommend.
If you like science fiction, I recommend giving Dies the Fire by S.M. Sterling a try. It is a science fic novel about a “happening” that occurs which causes all forms of electricity cease to work. I’m only a few chapters in myself so I can’t detail too much, yet, but it is great so far. It reads fast. The action and, suspense and dialogue are paced perfectly.
The Change occurred when an electrical storm centered over the island of Nantucket produced a blinding white flash that rendered all electronic devices and fuels inoperable. What follows is the most terrible global catastrophe in the history of the human race — and a Dark Age more universal and complete than could possibly be imagined.

Here’s a good one for Los Angelenos and anyone familiar with SoCal. After reading Invisible Man, a professor of mine recommended I give White Boy Shuffle a read. Just a couple pages in, this book by Paul Beatty was the funniest book I’ve ever read. Paul Beatty is truly aware of the writers of his genre that came before them and riffs on them unmercifully. Just heading the premise is enough to make you chuckle. Gunnar Kaufman’s mom decides her son is too spoiled and moves him to the gang infested areas of Los Angeles.
Paul Beatty’s hilarious and scathing debut novel is about Gunnar Kaufman, an awkward black surfer bum who is moved by his mother from Santa Monica to urban West Los Angeles. There, he begins to undergo a startling transformation from neighborhood outcast to basketball superstar, and eventually to reluctant messiah of a “divided, downtrodden people.”
If this is your type of thing, give White Boy Shuffle a read. It’s short, sweet, and very enjoyable.
